Principal's Message

Anne White

Congratulations to all staff and students for their work and enthusiasm this term. Term 3 has been busy with residential schools, excursions, contact visits, surveys and competitions.

I would like to congratulate Ebonnie Lockwood and Nirvana Rose Lockwood for winning the Flinders NT Escape Room Science Challenge. Ebonnie and Nirvana Rose demonstrated a lot of creativity and initiative in their presentation, well done girls!

I would also like to recognize the work of one of our Science teachers Veronica Ross for her work leading and implementing the Middle Years STEAM project with local Middle Years Schools. Feedback from the students who participated in the program was very positive, a great effort from all concerned.

Veronica is currently representing Australia at the ASTA Science Teachers Exchange in Japan, Veronica’s selection to attend this tour recognises her as a leading educator in this field Nationally.

To all Stage 2 students all the best for the remaining weeks of your school life, keep focused through to the end of your studies and through the exam period please remain in contact with your teachers and request feedback and support when you need. All the best, you are nearly there!

Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming and making my first term at NTSDE so enjoyable, I hope everyone has a safe and happy break and I look forward to continuing the work in Term 4.

Ms Anne White

Completer's Residential School

Monday 3 September - Friday 7 September 2018

NTSDE recently held their 2018 Completer’s Residential School with twelve Year 12 students attending from Jabiru, Katherine, Maningrida, Nutwood Downs Station, and Wurrumiyanga (Bathurst Island). As students are nearing the end of their Year 12 studies, they were focused on completing assessment tasks and preparing for exams with five days of timetabled lessons with their NTSDE teachers.

Students, however, did receive some light relief by attending King Pin and playing laser tag and arcade games and relaxing with yoga! Students also attended lovely afternoon tea with the Administrator, Her Honour the Honourable Vicki O’Halloran AM. We also had a very interesting tour of Government House and learnt about its extensive history.

It has been a pleasure to witness the growth and development of these talented young adults over their senior secondary journey.

Dream Time at the "G"

Congratulations to Tiwi College senior student Arthurina Moreen!

Arthurina recently entered a competition to design and create a guernsey to be worn by all players in the Dreamtime at the ‘G’ annual Australian Rules Football (AFL) match between Essendon and Richmond. The name of the match comes from the Australian Aboriginal term "Dreamtime" and "the 'G", a nickname for the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) where the match takes place.

Since the 2007 season, the match has been held on the Saturday night of the AFL's "Indigenous Round". The game draws one of the highest crowds of the home-and-away season, with an average crowd of over 70,000 since its inception and a record attendance of 85,656 in 2017.

Arthurina’s winning design encapsulated Essendon AFL Club colours and her own artistic style. Arthurina not only won the competition, but also had the opportunity to travel to Melbourne to train and undertake fitness testing at ‘The Hangar’ with the Dreamtime team. Arthurina also chose other Tiwi College students to escort her and proudly represent their College. A big congratulations from all of us here at NTSDE! Arthurina Moreen, Fred Puruntatameri and Julianna Kerinaiua have also used this experience to count towards their Stage 2 Community Studies B course.

Health & Physical Education Day

Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day is a nationwide initiative that highlights the importance of HPE in the Australian Curriculum, and its influence on the learning and development of children. Look how our staff, visiting teachers and students got active to help celebrate the day! Plenty of ‘squats’ and smiles all round!

This term we had several visitors to our fantastic school including INPEX Corporation and our soon to be new sister school; Finigan School of Distance Education from Queanbeyan New South Wales.

The INPEX visit allowed us to personally thank members of the corporation for the financial support they gave to the construction of our wonderful new school and the facilities utilised by our student cohorts. This was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate delivery of teaching and learning programs to students throughout the Northern Territory and see our students and teachers in action working together to achieve positive outcomes through Distance education. Our thanks for taking time out of their busy schedules go to all visitors who included David Gwyther; INPEX Deputy General Manager Darwin and Puri Minari Artiningprapti; Manager Social Performance INPEX Masela Ltd.

Our most recent visit was from a selected leadership team of the new Finigan School of Distance Education who joined us for two days of activities, peer educational discussion and sharing of operational methodology. Finigan will become operational from day 1 of the 2019 academic year with delivery to students from Kindergarten to Year 12. The visit allowed us the opportunity to demonstrate the daily processes of educational programs delivery by including our feeder school staff from both the Katherine and Alice Springs Schools of the Air via video conferencing platforms which are utilised for our students across the NT. We look forward to an ongoing sister school relationship with Finigan and wish Daniel Rattigan - Principal, Erin Casey - Primary Executive and Col Devitt - Deputy Principal, their teams and students all the best in their ongoing journey from January 2019.
